In today's world, sustainability is more important than ever. Teaching children about sustainable practices from a young age helps to instil values that will benefit our planet for generations to come. At Beyond the Beanstalk, we integrate sustainability into our STEM education through our comprehensive Sustainable STEM education programs. These programs are designed to educate children on alternative energy sources, upcycling, and creating urban gardens, making sustainability a core part of their learning experience.
The Importance of Sustainability in STEM Education
The primary goals of our Sustainable STEM programs are to introduce children and educators to sustainable ways of living and teaching practices. Sustainability is not just an add-on; it is incorporated into the very essence of each workshop. By making sustainable practices and ideas the foundation of our workshops, we ensure that students gain a deep understanding of environmental stewardship alongside their STEM education.
Our Sustainable STEM Programs
Beyond the Beanstalk offers three distinct series within our Sustainable STEM programs: Eco Odyssey, Compact Gardening, and Alternative Energy. Each series is designed to cater to children aged 2 to 12 years old and is adaptable to suit different age groups and learning stages.
Eco Odyssey Series
The Eco Odyssey series focuses on nature and how it can be incorporated into the learning curriculum. This series includes workshops such as:
Under the Beanstalk: This workshop teaches children about composting and the importance of recycling organic waste to enrich soil.
Inside the Beanstalk: Here, students explore the microscopic world, learning how tiny organisms play a huge role in our ecosystem.
Above the Beanstalk: This workshop highlights the importance of working with natural elements in engineering to create buildings that are both durable and environmentally friendly.
Compact Gardening Series
The Compact Gardening series encourages children to explore various methods of gardening and upcycling:
Hydroponics and Aquaponics: Students learn to grow plants without soil, using water and nutrient solutions, and even integrate fish into their systems for a symbiotic relationship.
Second Chance Plants and The Hidden Garden: These workshops focus on growing plants in upcycled containers and using everyday items as gardening tools. Children discover how to give new life to materials that would otherwise be discarded.
Alternative Energy Series
The Alternative Energy series introduces children to different sources of renewable energy:
Glow Getters: This activity uses UV light from the sun to create light, teaching kids about solar energy.
Sunnyside Up: Students learn to use sunlight to cook food, understanding the principles of solar ovens.
H2Woah!: This workshop explores the power of water and how hydropower can be harnessed.
Energy Engineers: Children disconnect from traditional electricity and use human power to operate toys and other devices.
Everybody Has Wind: Students discover the power of wind and how it can be used to generate energy.
Pulsetastic: This activity explores the human body's constant energy, highlighting how we can use our own power sustainably.
Learning Outcomes
Through these workshops, students gain a wide range of skills and knowledge:
Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving: By engaging in hands-on projects, children learn to think critically and solve problems creatively.
Environmental Awareness: Students develop a deep understanding of sustainable practices and the importance of protecting our environment.
Interdisciplinary Learning: Our workshops integrate science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, providing a holistic learning experience.
Feedback from students, parents, and educators has been overwhelmingly positive. Children love the hands-on activities and the opportunity to learn through doing. Educators appreciate the ready-to-implement activities that align with curriculum standards and foster a deeper understanding of sustainability.
One of our success stories involves a group of students who participated in the "Sunnyside Up" workshop. Initially sceptical about the effectiveness of a solar oven, they were amazed to see it work. This experience sparked a newfound interest in renewable energy and inspired several students to start their own projects at home.
Looking ahead, we plan to introduce new activities and expand our workshops to include more advanced projects for older students. We are constantly seeking ways to innovate and improve our programs, ensuring that we remain at the forefront of sustainable STEM education.
Sustainability is a crucial component of STEM education, and at Beyond the Beanstalk, we are committed to teaching children about the environment through engaging and interactive workshops. Our Sustainable STEM programs equip students with the knowledge and skills they need to make a positive impact on the world.
