Welcome to the Above the Beanstalk Sustainable STEM Workshop

Designed to ignite curiosity and cultivate environmental consciousness in children aged 2-5 and 5-12.

Overview:

Above the Beanstalk takes children on an intriguing exploration of weather dynamics and its profound influence on natural landscapes and human-made structures. Through engaging activities, they develop a deeper understanding of weather phenomena while honing critical thinking and creativity.

Engaging Activities:

The workshop begins with an interactive game where children embody different weather conditions, immersing themselves in the whims of nature. This playful activity fosters appreciation for the diverse manifestations of weather and its impact on the environment.

Next, children enthusiastically construct structures using various materials, from plastic bricks to straws and matchsticks. With boundless imagination, they craft architectural wonders, exploring how different materials withstand environmental elements.

Thrilling Experiments:

In the next phase, children engage in thrilling experiments to test the strength and durability of their creations. Using specialised equipment, they simulate weather phenomena like rain, wind, and floods, observing how their structures fare under these conditions. This practical experimentation reinforces STEM concepts and encourages critical thinking.

Delightful Gardening Activity:

The workshop culminates in a delightful gardening activity, where children create their miniature lawns. They construct fences to protect their gardens, plant seeds, and nurture them with peat moss and water. Through this hands-on experience, children learn the importance of maintenance and care in preserving their creations.

Educational Benefits:

Above the Beanstalk expands children's knowledge of weather systems and develops invaluable skills in problem-solving, creativity, and environmental stewardship. This immersive experience ignites their passion for science and engineering while instilling a deeper appreciation for the wonders of the natural world.

It is carefully crafted to support the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF), My Time, Our Place (MTOP), and the Australian Curriculum. Each activity is designed to meet educational standards while providing a fun and enriching learning experience for children of all ages.
