Welcome to Aquaponics Sustainable STEM workshop

Dive into the fascinating world of aquaponics with Beyond the Beanstalk's Aquaponics Adventure workshop! Designed for budding scientists aged 2-5 and 5-12, this immersive experience unveils the wonders of sustainable food production through engaging hands-on activities and exploration.

Overview:

Today's workshop is all about harnessing the power of aquaponics to cultivate plants for food in an energy-efficient and cost-effective manner. Similar to hydroponics, aquaponics involves growing plants without soil, revolutionising the way we produce food sustainably.

Exciting Discoveries:

Bell Siphon Secrets: Children learn about the ingenious Bell siphon and how it ensures that both plants and yabbies receive oxygen-rich water, fostering their growth and well-being.

Yabby Exploration: Delving into the world of yabbies, children discover where these fascinating creatures live in the wild, their appearance, and dietary habits.

Organic Collaboration: Children uncover the symbiotic relationship between yabbies and plants in aquaponics. Yabbies contribute fertilising "poop," enriching the plants, while the plants and clay pebbles filter the water for the fish, creating a self-sustaining ecosystem.

Aquaponics Setup:

Each centre receives a comprehensive aquaponics setup, including two tanks assembled as one unit: a 'grow bed' for plants and a 'yabby tank' for yabbies. The setup also includes a submersible pump and a Bell siphon for efficient water circulation.

Maintenance Tips:

Regular water level checks ensure smooth operation of your aquaponics system. Simply top up the water in the grow bed, and it will trickle through to the yabby tank.

Yabbies are fed pellets, but it's essential to ensure they've eaten everything before providing more food. With proper care, yabbies can live up to 7 years, showcasing the importance of responsible stewardship.
